Why visit
The Mohammed V Mausoleum brings together national remembrance and Moroccan architectural craftsmanship. Observe its building and decoration respectfully, and combine it with Hassan Tower opposite during a visit to the Hassan district.
A brief history
Built between 1962 and 1971, the mausoleum honours King Mohammed V, a central figure in Moroccan independence. It also houses the tombs of his sons, King Hassan II and Prince Moulay Abdallah. Facing medieval Hassan Tower, this twentieth-century building combines national memory with traditional craftsmanship. White marble, a green roof, zellige and carved decoration give it its monumental character. The esplanade reveals two distinct periods of Rabat.
What to see
Start with the building’s outline and position on the esplanade. When access is open, observe stonework, mosaics and wood decoration. Follow the guards’ instructions and respect the ceremonial setting. Continue to Hassan Tower to compare the buildings.
Duration and planning
Allow 20–30 minutes for the mausoleum and about an hour with the tower, excluding possible waiting. Agree on a meeting point for your group or family and leave time to visit without rushing.
Address and opening hours
The site is on boulevard Mohamed Lyazidi in Hassan. Visit Rabat lists weekdays 8 am–6 pm. Weekend hours are presented ambiguously, so confirm directly. Ceremonies and access conditions may also change the route.
