The Oudayas

A focused walk between the kasbah, the Andalusian garden and river views. A good choice for an unhurried visit.

Information consulted on 15 October 2026

Kasbah of the Oudayas

Kasbah of the Oudayas

Take time among the lanes, gateways and viewpoints. Choose a few nearby stops rather than filling the walk with detours. Facades and views over the Bouregreg are part of the experience, but this remains a lived-in neighbourhood.

The Andalusian garden and National Adornment Museum can complement the walk, subject to opening arrangements. An indoor visit needs extra time: make it a proper stop before returning to the lanes.

A little history

The Oudayas belong to Rabat’s older areas, with elements reaching back to the twelfth century. The city’s heritage also preserves traces of its Andalusian and Moorish past. Gateways and defensive walls provide useful historical landmarks before you look at the neighbourhood’s present-day life.

An idea for a walk

  1. Begin near the main kasbah gate and look at the walls before entering.
  2. Combine the lanes with the Andalusian garden; add the Adornment Museum for an indoor cultural stop.
  3. Finish at a Bouregreg viewpoint or the Café Maure, then choose an onward route towards the medina or coast.

Before you go

Allow roughly one to two hours to wander, excluding museum visits and meals. Wear comfortable shoes: your chosen route may include steps, slopes and uneven surfaces. For a stroller or wheelchair, confirm the precise entrance with the venue; the entire kasbah is not presented here as an accessible route. Wind and sun affect comfort at viewpoints.

A break for food

The Café Maure below the Andalusian garden is a useful landmark for tea and pastries. Check the current offering and prices on arrival. A meal by the Bouregreg can extend the outing, but allow for the walk and any waiting time.
