The medina

Explore on foot among gates, shops and crafts. The medina rewards attention to its smaller lanes as well as its main streets.

Choose a starting point and an exit, then leave room for detours. Bab El Had is a useful starting landmark; Avenue Mohammed V provides a clear axis through the area. Rue des Consuls extends the walk towards crafts and workshops.

This is a working and residential neighbourhood. Look at materials, objects and shopfronts without turning your walk into a shopping race. Before buying a souvenir, ask about its price, material and how to carry it home.

A little history

The old town preserves several layers of Rabat’s history. Almohad walls recall the twelfth-century urban project; Moorish and Andalusian traces recall the seventeenth century. Gates and neighbourhood edges help explain the relationship between the old city and later urban extensions.

An idea for a walk

  1. Start at Bab El Had and follow a recognisable axis before exploring shopping lanes.
  2. Head towards Rue des Consuls to look at crafts, asking before photographing a shop.
  3. If time allows, continue towards the Oudayas. Use a map to choose your exit and avoid retracing your steps unnecessarily.

Before you go

Allow roughly 90 minutes to two hours for an unhurried walk, excluding a meal. This is a suggested allowance rather than a measured itinerary. Use a tram or taxi to reach an entrance, then continue on foot. With a stroller or luggage, favour wider streets and check the route before entering a narrow lane. Save your meeting point offline.

A break for food

Dinarjat and Dar Rbatia are included in our medina dining selection. Check the menu and book where necessary for a sit-down meal. Compare displayed offers before ordering a simpler snack or coffee.
