The Ocean district

Explore the neighbourhood on both its city and seaside edges. A walk combining daily life, Atlantic air and an optional cultural stop.

A view of Rabat’s coast

A view of Rabat’s coast

Choose a precise starting point and a section of the coast rather than a long walk with no return planned. The Ocean district lends itself to looking at streets and taking a break by the Atlantic. Part of the experience is the changing atmosphere between shops and the seafront.

The National Photography Museum at Fort Rottembourg is an idea for extending the coastal outing. Check its guide and plan the journey from your starting point: the seafront contains several distinct stops rather than a single destination.

A little history

The Ocean district appears in the study of Rabat’s architectural heritage from 1900–1960 held among UNESCO documents. Look at street layouts and facades, then compare this urban extension with the medina’s fabric. Changes in the neighbourhood are also part of what you can observe.

An idea for a walk

  1. Start at a landmark chosen on the map and spend time looking at neighbourhood streets.
  2. Reach a section of the coast with an identified return route or transport option.
  3. For an indoor visit, add the Photography Museum as a separate stop, subject to opening arrangements.

Before you go

Allow roughly one to two hours for a chosen walk, excluding the museum. Wind can make the coast feel cool even in sunshine, so adapt your clothing. With children or a stroller, check the route, crossings and places for a break. A coastal walk is not a recommendation to swim; assess local conditions on arrival.

A break for food

Choose a break along your route and check displayed prices before ordering. For a meal with a view, confirm the actual table offered and menu rather than relying on the neighbourhood name. Our dining selection can help you plan another part of the day.
